Getting Ready for the Business Sale

There will be plenty you have to do to sell your business.  You have to ask the important questions of whether now is the time to sell and how you will sell the business.  You also have to streamline your business operations to help the sale go more smoothly.  The buyer will feel more comfortable purchasing your business if you have a few things already in place.  As always the value of your business is an imperative part to the sale.  You want to get what it is worth and the buyer wants to feel as though they received a deal on the sale.

The buyer of your business is going to be looking at your model or business strategy.  They will want to know what worked and why.  Most often the buyer is going to want to look at your business documents such as the business plan you wrote up and have changed over the years.  The buyer may even ask what works and what does not work.

Besides the business plan there are other aspects of your business you must consider.  First, is your management team strong?  Can they perform under a new owner and will they be willing to help?  A strong management team is very important for a new buyer and the seller.  First, by showing a strong employment staff you can help transition the staff with the new owner.  Second the staff can help the new owner continue the business.  They can be there for questions the owner might have, as well as helping to keep the other staff in line.

When preparing your business for sale it is a good time to analyse your customer base and suppliers.  You need to show there is potential for growth.  You also need to show that you are working on this growth.  You want the new buyer to see you adding suppliers or customers.

Depending on the type of business you are selling there are some specific aspects you need to make sure the potential buyer understands.  For example a business trade like plumbing, construction, or even a restaurant needs to comply with health, safety, employment, and licensing laws.  A restaurant needs to have a qualified chef in the kitchen.  A plumbing business has to have employees trained in plumbing and people who have apprenticed for the correct amount of time.

Before selling your business you should make sure the potential buyer has these necessary qualifications or that they will keep the staff you trained in order to have qualifying personnel.  Any legal disputes your company may be undergoing will need to be solved before you can sell your business.  If the disputes will take years to solve due to unreasonable demands you may search for a buyer who could settle the dispute quickly and for you.  Though it is harder to find a buyer for a business with a dispute it is not impossible given the right circumstances and potential buyer.  When you streamline your business it is easier for the potential buyer to see the value.
